    Tripurasundari Ashtakam

(The octet to the beauty of three worlds)

    By Adhi Shankara Bhagawat Pada

    Translated by P.R.Ramachander

Kadambha vana charineen, muni kadambha kadambhineem,

Nidhambha jitha bhoodaram sura nithambhini sevitham,

    Navamburuha lochanam abhinavambhudha shyamalam,

    Trilochana kudumbhineem tripurasundarim asraye. (1)

I salute that beauty of the three worlds, Who is the consort of the three eyed one,

Who wanders in the forest of Kadambha*, Who is like a rich cloud to the sages**,

Whose hips excel the mountains, Who is served by wide hipped deva maidens,

Who has eyes like newly opened lotus, and whose colour is that of the rich grey cloud. (1)

*Kadambha is a tree called Nauclea cadamba. It is said to put forth orange, fragrant buds at the roaring of thunder clouds. A withered relic of the Kadambha tree is preserved in the precincts of the Madurai Sri Meenakshi temple. It also means multitude. In that sense, the Kadambha forest stands for the universe that the Devi permeates completely.

** She is like a cloud that quenches the thirst for knowledge of the sages.

Kadambha vana vasineem kanaka vallaki dharineem,

    Maharhamani harineem mukha samullasa dwarineem,

Daya vibhava karineem, visadha lochineem charineem,

    Trilochana kudumbhineem tripurasundarim asraye. (2)

I salute that beauty of the three worlds, Who is the consort of the three eyed one,

Who lives in the forest of Kadambha trees, Who carries a Veena made of Gold,

Who wears a necklace of precious gems, Whose face is aglow with the delight of nectar,

Who in her mercy showers all that is wanted, Who has exceedingly pretty eyes, and who keeps on shifting. (2)

    Kadambha vanashalaya kuchbarollasanmalaya,

    Kuchopamithashailaya gurukrupalasad velaya,

    Madarunakapolaya madhura geetha vachalaya,

Kayapi gana leelaya kavachiha vayam leelaya. (3)

We are playfully covered by her from all evils, by her dwelling in Kadambha forest,

By her garland which is kept above her breasts, by her breasts which are like mountains,

By her grace and benevolence which is great, by her blushed cheeks which are red,

By her mellifluous sweet toned songs, and by her body which is blue like the cloud. (3)

Kadambha vana madhykam kanaka mandala lopa sthithaam,

    Shadambhuruha vasineem sathath sidha sowdamineem,

Vidambhitha japa ruchim vikhacha chandra choodamanim,

    Trilochana kudumbhineem tripurasundarim asraye. (4)

I salute that beauty of the three worlds, Who is the consort of the three eyed one,

Who is in the middle of Kadambha forest, Who lives golden disc which is,

Situated on the six lotus flowers, Who is the permanent light giver to the seers,

Who likes fully open japa flowers, And who wears the crescent as her head gear. (4)

    Kuchancithabanjikaam kutila kunthalalangrutham,

    Kusheshaya nivasineem kutila chitha vidwesineem,

    Madaaruna vilochanaam manasi jari sammohineem,

Madhnga muni kanyakaam, madhurabhashineen ashraye. (5)

I take refuge in her who talks sweetly, Who is the daughter of sage Mathanga,

Who holds the Veena close to her breasts, Who prettily makes up her curly tresses,

Who lives the peals of water lily, Who hates people with evil thoughts,

Who has eyes red due to her zest, And who entices the destroyer of the god of love. (5)

Smareth prathama puspineem, rudhira bindu neelabaram,

Graheetha madhu pathrikaam madhu vigurna nethranchalam,

Gana sthans baronnatham galitha soolikaam shyamalam,

    Trilochana kudumbhineem tripurasundarim asraye. (6)

I salute that beauty of the three worlds, Who is the consort of the three eyed one,

Who holds the first flower of God of love, Who wears the bluish silk dotted with red spots,

Who holds in her hand the pot of wine, Whose rim of eyes of shaking due to intoxication,

Who has heavy breasts which rise high, and who is the swarthy one with disheveled locks. (6)

    Sakumkuma vilepanaam alaka kampikasthurikaam,

    Samanthahasitheshanaam sachara chapa pasangusam,

Asesha jana mohineem aruna malya bhooshambaram,

Japa kusuma basuraam japa vidhow smarathembikam. (7)

I think of that Ambika during meditation, Who adorns herself with saffron,

Whose tresses have the perfume of musk, Who watches everyone with gentle smile,

Who has bow, arrow, a noose and hook, Who entices everyone with least effort,

Whose cloth is decorated with red hibiscus, Who shines decorated with Japa flowers. (7)

    Purandara purandrikaam chikura bandha sairandhrikam,

    Pithamaha pathivrutham, patu pateera charcharathaam,

    Mukunda ramani manim lasadalangriya kaarineem,

Bajami bhuvanambikam, sura vadhootika chetikam. (8)

I salute that Goddess of the world, Who rules over the world of Lord Shiva,

Who has her tresses plaited by the queen of devas, Who is applied sandal by the consort of Brahma,

Who is made to wear ornaments of gems by Goddess Lakshmi,

And who has several Deva maidens as companions. (8)

I performed bad deeds, associated with bad company, cherished bad thoughts, have been a bad servant,
I did not perform my traditional duties, deeply engaged in bad conducts,
My eyes saw with bad intentions, tongue always spoke bad words,
You are my refuge, You alone are my refuge, Oh Mother Bhavani. (5)

Little do I know about the Lord of creation (Brahma), the Lord of Ramaa (Goddess Lakshmi) (Vishnu), The great Lord (Shiva), the Lord of the Devas (Indra),
The Lord of the day (Surya) or the Lord of the night (Chandra),
I do not know about other gods, but always seeking Your refuge,

    Bhavani Bhujangam

Written by Adhi Sankara Bhagwat Pada

    Translated by P.R. Ramachander

    Shadathara pangeruham, anthar virajath,

    Sushumnantharalethi thejollasanthim,

    Sudha mandalam dravayanthim pibanthim,

Sudha moorthy meede chidananda roopam. (1)

I bow before that personification of nectar,

Who is the everlasting immortal bliss,

Who is the luster in the Sushumna,

Which is in the six chakras of the body,

And who melts the moon and drinks its light. (1)

    Jwalath kodi balarka bhasarunangim,

    Sulavanya srungara lokabhiramam,

    Mahapadma kinjalka madhye virajat,

Trikone nishannam bhaje sri Bhavanim. (2)

I sing about that Bhavani, Who sits in the triangle,

Which shines in the stamen of the great lotus,

Who has the luster of crores of rising suns,

    Who is immensely pretty,

And who attracts the entire world by her charm. (2)

    Kwanath Kinkini nuporoth bhasi rathna,

    Prabhaleeda lakshardhra padaabhja yugmam,

    Ajesachyuthadyai surai sevyamanam,

Maha devi manmurdhy thee bhavayami. (3)

Oh, great goddess please keep your feet,

Which have jingling bells made of gems tied to it,

Which shine in the luster of your wet lac painted feet,

And which are worshipped by Vishnu, Brahma and others

On my head and bless. (3)

    Susonamambara baddha ne virajan

    Maha rathna kanchi kalapam nithambham,

    Sphurat dakshinavartha nabhim cha thisro,

    Vallerambha thee romarajim bajeham. (4)

I worship the streak of hair on your belly,

Thine shining navel circling to the left,

Thine hips dressed in red garments,

And your waist adorned with golden tinkling belt,

Studded with greatest of jewels. (4)

    Lasad Vrutha muthunga manikya kumbho,

    Pamasri stanadwandha mbabujakshim,

    Bhaje dugadha punarabhiramam thavedam,

Maha hara deeptham sada prasruthasyam. (5)

I worship thine twin radiant raised breasts full of milk,

Which are round and like the gem studded pot,

And which are ever shining with milk,

Hey mother who has lotus like eyes. (5)

    Sirisha prasoonoolasaasad bahu dandair,

    Jwaladwanakodanda pasangusaischa,

    Chaladkankanodhara keyura bhoosho,

Jwaladd bharlasanthim Bhaje Sri Bhavanim. (6)

I worship that Bhavani Who glitters with her arms,

Which are as delicate as Sirisa flowers,

And which carry arrow, bow, noose and goad,

And which shines with bangles and bracelets. (6)

Sarad poorna Chandra prabha purna bimba,

    Darasmera vakthra aravindam susantham,

    Su ratnavali hara tataka shobham,

    Maha suprasannam Bhaje Bhavanim. (7)

I worship that Bhavani, Who is extremely pleasant,

Who shines like the full moon of autumn,

Whose lotus like face is adorned with peace,

And who shines with gem studded necklace and ear studs. (7)

    Sunasaputam Sundara bru lalatam,

Thavo ashtai sriyam dana daksham kadaksham,

    Lalate lasadh randa kasthuri bhoosham,

    Sphurachri mukambhoja meedeha mamba. (8)

I praise thee Amba, Who adorns your lotus like face,

With musk on the forehead and cheeks, Who has very pretty nostrils,

Who has a pretty forehead, Who has well formed beautiful lips.

And who is capable of blessing with a side long glance. (8)

    Chalath kunthalanthar brahmad bhrunga vrundam,

    Ghana snighdha dhammila bushojwalam te,

    Sphuran mauli manikhya bandendu rekha,

    Vilassollasad deepya moordhana mede. (9)

I praise thine head, Which is playfully radiant,

Which is adorned by the crescent moon,

Which is decorated by the line of gems,

In whose dense hair the swarm of bees, enter swirl and play,

And which is decorated, by densely woven white jasmine flowers. (9)

    Ithi sri Bhavani swaroopam thavedam,

    Prapanchat param chahi sookshma prasannam,

    Sphuratvambha dimbhasya mey hrth saroje,

Sada Vang mayam sarva thejo mayam cha. (10)

This form of yours, Oh Bhavani, Which is much above the universe,

In its micro form, may please shine in the lotus heart mine,

And bless me in your lustrous form,

So that I rule over the wealth of words. (10)

    Ganeshabhi mukkhyakhilai sakthi brundai,

    Vrytham vai sphurajchakra rajollasanthim,

    Param Raja rajeswari tripuri thwam,

    Shivanngouparistha shivaam bhavayami. (11)

I meditate on you, the wife of Shiva, Who is sitting pleasantly on his lap,

Surrounded by Shakthis led by lord Ganesha,

Who is sitting highly radiant on the chakra raja,

And who is Tripura and Rajarajeswari. (11)

Thwam arka sthwam indu sthwam agni sthwam aapa,

    Sthwam aakasa Bhoo, Vayavasthwam mahatwam,

    Thwadanyo na kaschid prapanchosthi sarva,

Thwam ananda samvit swaroopam bhajeham. (12)

I sing about you as a form of blissful knowledge,

As one to whom, there is none superior,

As you are the sun, moon, fire, water,

Ether, earth, fire and the great essence. (12)

    Sruthi namagamye suvedagamagne,

    Mahimno na janathi param thavamba,

    Sthuthim karthumichami they thwam Bhavani,

    Sramasweda mathra pramugdha kilaham. (13)

Though I know not thine greatness,

Wish I to praise you, Oh, Bhavani,

Who is the knower of Vedas and Agamas,

And who is unreachable through scriptures.

So please pardon me for doing this. (13)

    Gurusthwm Shivasthwam cha Shakthisthwam meva,

    Thwamevasi matha, pitha cha thwameva,

    Thwammevasi vidhya, thwamevasi bhandhu,

Gathir meymathir devi sarvam thwameva. (14)

You are my teacher, you are my lord Shiva,

    You are the Goddess Shakthi,

You are my mother, you are my father,

You are the knowledge, you are my relations,

And so you are my only refuge, my only thought,

And everything that I can think of. (14)

    Saranye, varanye, sukarunya murthe,

    Hiranyodharadyai raganye, supunye,

    Bhavaranya bheethescha maam pahi bhadre,

    Namasthe, Namasthe, Namasthe, Bhavani. (15)

Salutations, salutations and salutations, Oh Bhavani,

You are my refuge, my boon and form of all mercy,

You are greatest among all devas, oh holy one,

And so, please protect me from this forest snare of life. (15)

    Ithi maam mahachchri Bhavani bujangam,

Sthuthim yah pated bhakthi yukthascha thasmai,

    Swakeeyam padam saswatham veda saram,

    Sriyam chashtasidhim Bhavani dadathi. (16)

Who ever correctly reads with devotion,

This great hymn praising Bhavani from head to toe,

Would attain a permanent place of salvation,

Which is the essence of Vedas,

And also get wealth and the eight occult powers. (16)

    Bhavani, Bhavani, Bhavani, Trivaram,

    Mudaram mudha sarvadha ye japanthe,

Na soko, na moho na papam, na bheethi,

    Kadachi, kadanchit kuthashrijananam. (17)

Three times repeat the holy name of Bhavani,

With devotion and repeatedly for ever,

And get rid of sorrow, passion, sin and fear,

For all time and for all ways. (17)

O Mother, I know neither mantra nor yantra, nor how to invoke you or how to meditate on you. I do not know your story or your glory or your various postures, and I am not given to weeping in distress. But one thing I know for certain is that seeking shelter under your protection, and following your order, is definitely going to end all afflictions. (1)

    Vidhera-gyaanena dravina-vira-henaala-satayaa vidheyaa-shaktya-tvaat-tava charana-yoryaa chyutira-bhoot,

O loving Mother, ensuring redemption to all afflicted, I know not how to worship and neither have I resources nor temperament, for I am callous by nature, nor the special knowledge to conduct your worship. But in rendering service to you, if I have committed any lapses or mistake, forgive me Mother. For there could be a bad child but never a bad mother. (2)

O Mother, this earth is full of your many simple hearted and even minded children but among them I am the most fickle and of unsteady mind. Rarely there may be one like me. But still, your casting me away is not proper for in this world-there could be a bad child but never a bad mother. (3)

Jagan-maatar-maata-stava charana-sevaa na rachitaa na vaa dattam devi dravinam-api bhoo-yastava mayaa,

O Mother of the world. I never rendered any service to you and never did I offer any wealth to you, but still you shower affection on me, because in this world there could be a bad child but never a bad mother! (4)

    Parit-yaktaa devaa vividha-vidhi-sevaa-kulatayaa mayaa panchaa-sheete-radhikam-apaneete tu vayasi,

At this age, having left the worship of other divinities due to several problems of service and worries, I have approached you for your grace. Who else but you should I seek shelter in for I have no hope from any other. (5)

Shvapaako jal-paako bhavati madhu-paako-pamagiraa niraatanko ranko viharati chiram koti-kanakaih,

Even if one word of your speech falls in the ear of a foolish rascal it is enough to make him utter sweet speech like a seasoned scholar; a pauper to become rich, owning great wealth and enjoying life with all its pleasures until ripe old age. When listening to one word can work such wonders, who can measure the reward reaped by those constantly chanting your name? (6)

    Chitaa-bhasmaa-lepo garalama-shanam dik-patadharo jataa-dhaaree kanthe bhuja-gapati-haaree pashupatihi,

O Mother, if Shiva, who keeps his body smeared with ash; who eats poison for food, who remains naked with tangled hair and a serpent garlanding his neck; and a begging bowl in his hands, is crowned as the Lord of the Universe, then that is only as a consequence of his marrying you, O Goddess! (7)

O Mother, with your face bright with moonlight, I neither long for salvation nor for worldly riches nor hope to acquire any proficiency in sciences nor have a yearning for pleasure. My only request to you is to allow me pass my life chanting your names. (8)
