2.    KalikaAshtakam

(Octet addressed to Goddess Kali)
Translated by P. R. Ramachander
Dhyanam

Galadha Raktha mukthavali khanda mala, Maha gora raava, sudamshtra karala
Vivasthra smasanalaya mukthakesi, Maha kala-kamakulaa kalikeyam. (1)

Wearing a garland of skulls drenched with blood,
Having a fearful form, black in colour with externally projecting teeth,
She is nude and lives in cremation ground with fully untied hair,
And she is Kali busy in love play with the great Lord Shiva. (1)

Bhuje vama yugme siro asi dhadhaana, Varam Daksha yugmebhyam vai thadaiva,
Sumadhya api thunga sthana bhara namra, Lasad Raktha srukka dhwaya susmithasya. (2)

Carrying cut heads as well as sword in her two left hands,
Symbols of blessing and protection in her right hands,
Having a lion like middle and bent because of heavy breasts,
And with shining blood drenched lips but smiling prettily. (2)

Sava dwandhwa karnavathasaa sukesi, Lasad pretha pani prayukthaika Kanchi,
Savaakara - manchathirooda shivaabhi, Schadhir dikshu shabdhayamanabhireje. (3)

Wearing ornaments of made of corpses in her two ears, having a very good hair,
Wearing shining armlets made of corpses and also girdles
Sitting on a seat of corpses and she shines,
Making very fearful sound rocking all four directions. (3)

Sthuthi, (Prayer)

Viranchyadhi devasthrayasthe gunaamsthreen, Samaradhya Kali! Pradhaana bhabhuva,
Anadhim suradhim makhadim bhavadhim, Swaroopam thwadheeyam na vindanthi devaa. (4)

The holy trinity are depending on your three qualities,
And are engaged in worshipping you as Kali,
You have a form which is primeval, first among devas,
Prime of all fire sacrifices and root cause of the world,
And even the Devas do not understand you. (4)

Jaganmohaneeyam thu vagvadheneeyam, Suhrut poshinim shathru samharaneeyam,
Vacha sthambaneeyam kimu uchataneeyam, Swaroopam thwadeeyam na vindanthi devaa. (5)

You attract the entire world and are also worshipped by the Goddess of learning,
You are taking care of devotees and are destroyer of your enemies,
You can completely benumb any voice and what can be chanted about you,
And even the devas do not understand you. (5)

Iyam swarga dathri puna kalpavalli, Manojasthu kaamaan yadartha prakuryath,
Kadha they kruthartha bhavatheethi nithyam, Swaroopam thwadeeyam na vindanthi devaa. (6)

You are the one who grants heaven, and also the wish giving tree.
You fulfill the desires of mind in the real realized form,
And all those who benefit by you, would become grateful to you,
And even the devas do not understand you. (6)

Surapanamathe! Subhakthanurakathe, Lasad pootha chithe! Yadha aavirbhavasthe!
Japa-dhyana-pooja sudha dhoutha pankha, Swaroopam thwadeeyam na vindanthi devaa. (7)

You are intoxicated, You love your real devotees,
And you are born in the hearts of your loving devotees,
And your form is of the nectar like wings of chant, meditation and worship,
And even the devas do not understand you. (7)

Chidhananda - kandham hasan mandha mandham, Sarachandrakoti-prabha punja bimbham,
Muneenaam kavinaam hrudhi dhyotha manam, Swaroopam thwadeeyam na vindanthi devaa. (8)

You have a form of divine joy and smile slowly, slowly,
You shine like the globe of billions of moons,
And you make the minds of sages and poets shine,
And even the devas do not understand you. (8)

Maha - megha - kali, surakthabhi shubra, Kadachith vichithraakruthir yoga maya,
Na bala na vrudha na kamathuraapi, Swaroopam thwadeeyam na vindanthi devaa. (9)

Sometimes you are black like a clouds,
Sometimes you are of the pure colour of blood,
Sometimes you are the yogic illusion which has peculiar forms,
You are neither a lass nor a old woman nor one who is intensely passionate,
And even the devas do not understand you. (9)

Kshamaswa aparadham maha guptha bhavam, Maya loka madhye prakasikrutham yath,
Thwa dhyanapoothena chapalya bhavath, Swaroopam thwadeeyam na vindanthi devaa. (10)

Please pardon me for describing, the very secret form of yours,
In the middle of the people of the entire world,
Please pardon this very unstable conduct of mine,
And even the devas do not understand you. (10)

Phalasruthi
Yadhi dhyana yuktha pateth yo manushyasthadha sarva loke vishalo bhavecha,
Gruhe cha ashta sidhirmruthe chapi mukthi swaroopam thwadheeyam na vindanthi devaa.

That man who reads this meditating on you,
Would become a great one in this entire world,
And even inhis home he would become an expert on the eight occult powers,
And even the devas do not understand you.

|| Kaalikashtakam Sampoornam ||

4.    Bhavani Bhujangam

Written by Adhi Sankara Bhagwat Pada

Translated by P.R. Ramachander

Shadathara pangeruham, anthar virajath,

Sushumnantharalethi thejollasanthim,

Sudha mandalam dravayanthim pibanthim,

Sudha moorthy meede chidananda roopam. (1)

I bow before that personification of nectar,

Who is the everlasting immortal bliss,

Who is the luster in the Sushumna,

Which is in the six chakras of the body,

And who melts the moon and drinks its light. (1)

Jwalath kodi balarka bhasarunangim,

Sulavanya srungara lokabhiramam,

Mahapadma kinjalka madhye virajat,

Trikone nishannam bhaje sri Bhavanim. (2)

I sing about that Bhavani, Who sits in the triangle,

Which shines in the stamen of the great lotus,

Who has the luster of crores of rising suns,

Who is immensely pretty,

And who attracts the entire world by her charm. (2)

Kwanath Kinkini nuporoth bhasi rathna,

Prabhaleeda lakshardhra padaabhja yugmam,

Ajesachyuthadyai surai sevyamanam,

Maha devi manmurdhy thee bhavayami. (3)

Oh, great goddess please keep your feet,

Which have jingling bells made of gems tied to it,

Which shine in the luster of your wet lac painted feet,

And which are worshipped by Vishnu, Brahma and others

On my head and bless. (3)

Susonamambara baddha ne virajan

Maha rathna kanchi kalapam nithambham,

Sphurat dakshinavartha nabhim cha thisro,

Vallerambha thee romarajim bajeham. (4)

I worship the streak of hair on your belly,

Thine shining navel circling to the left,

Thine hips dressed in red garments,

And your waist adorned with golden tinkling belt,

Studded with greatest of jewels. (4)

Lasad Vrutha muthunga manikya kumbho,

Pamasri stanadwandha mbabujakshim,

Bhaje dugadha punarabhiramam thavedam,

Maha hara deeptham sada prasruthasyam. (5)

I worship thine twin radiant raised breasts full of milk,

Which are round and like the gem studded pot,

And which are ever shining with milk,

Hey mother who has lotus like eyes. (5)

Sirisha prasoonoolasaasad bahu dandair,

Jwaladwanakodanda pasangusaischa,

Chaladkankanodhara keyura bhoosho,

Jwaladd bharlasanthim Bhaje Sri Bhavanim. (6)

I worship that Bhavani Who glitters with her arms,

Which are as delicate as Sirisa flowers,

And which carry arrow, bow, noose and goad,

And which shines with bangles and bracelets. (6)

Sarad poorna Chandra prabha purna bimba,

Darasmera vakthra aravindam susantham,

Su ratnavali hara tataka shobham,

Maha suprasannam Bhaje Bhavanim. (7)

I worship that Bhavani, Who is extremely pleasant,

Who shines like the full moon of autumn,

Whose lotus like face is adorned with peace,

And who shines with gem studded necklace and ear studs. (7)

Sunasaputam Sundara bru lalatam,

Thavo ashtai sriyam dana daksham kadaksham,

Lalate lasadh randa kasthuri bhoosham,

Sphurachri mukambhoja meedeha mamba. (8)

I praise thee Amba, Who adorns your lotus like face,

With musk on the forehead and cheeks, Who has very pretty nostrils,

Who has a pretty forehead, Who has well formed beautiful lips.

And who is capable of blessing with a side long glance. (8)

Chalath kunthalanthar brahmad bhrunga vrundam,

Ghana snighdha dhammila bushojwalam te,

Sphuran mauli manikhya bandendu rekha,

Vilassollasad deepya moordhana mede. (9)

I praise thine head, Which is playfully radiant,

Which is adorned by the crescent moon,

Which is decorated by the line of gems,

In whose dense hair the swarm of bees, enter swirl and play,

And which is decorated, by densely woven white jasmine flowers. (9)

Ithi sri Bhavani swaroopam thavedam,

Prapanchat param chahi sookshma prasannam,

Sphuratvambha dimbhasya mey hrth saroje,

Sada Vang mayam sarva thejo mayam cha. (10)

This form of yours, Oh Bhavani, Which is much above the universe,

In its micro form, may please shine in the lotus heart mine,

And bless me in your lustrous form,

So that I rule over the wealth of words. (10)

Ganeshabhi mukkhyakhilai sakthi brundai,

Vrytham vai sphurajchakra rajollasanthim,

Param Raja rajeswari tripuri thwam,

Shivanngouparistha shivaam bhavayami. (11)

I meditate on you, the wife of Shiva, Who is sitting pleasantly on his lap,

Surrounded by Shakthis led by lord Ganesha,

Who is sitting highly radiant on the chakra raja,

And who is Tripura and Rajarajeswari. (11)

Thwam arka sthwam indu sthwam agni sthwam aapa,

Sthwam aakasa Bhoo, Vayavasthwam mahatwam,

Thwadanyo na kaschid prapanchosthi sarva,

Thwam ananda samvit swaroopam bhajeham. (12)

I sing about you as a form of blissful knowledge,

As one to whom, there is none superior,

As you are the sun, moon, fire, water,

Ether, earth, fire and the great essence. (12)

Sruthi namagamye suvedagamagne,

Mahimno na janathi param thavamba,

Sthuthim karthumichami they thwam Bhavani,

Sramasweda mathra pramugdha kilaham. (13)

Though I know not thine greatness,

Wish I to praise you, Oh, Bhavani,

Who is the knower of Vedas and Agamas,

And who is unreachable through scriptures.

So please pardon me for doing this. (13)

Gurusthwm Shivasthwam cha Shakthisthwam meva,

Thwamevasi matha, pitha cha thwameva,

Thwammevasi vidhya, thwamevasi bhandhu,

Gathir meymathir devi sarvam thwameva. (14)

You are my teacher, you are my lord Shiva,

You are the Goddess Shakthi,

You are my mother, you are my father,

You are the knowledge, you are my relations,

And so you are my only refuge, my only thought,

And everything that I can think of. (14)

Saranye, varanye, sukarunya murthe,

Hiranyodharadyai raganye, supunye,

Bhavaranya bheethescha maam pahi bhadre,

Namasthe, Namasthe, Namasthe, Bhavani. (15)

Salutations, salutations and salutations, Oh Bhavani,

You are my refuge, my boon and form of all mercy,

You are greatest among all devas, oh holy one,

And so, please protect me from this forest snare of life. (15)

Ithi maam mahachchri Bhavani bujangam,

Sthuthim yah pated bhakthi yukthascha thasmai,

Swakeeyam padam saswatham veda saram,

Sriyam chashtasidhim Bhavani dadathi. (16)

Who ever correctly reads with devotion,

This great hymn praising Bhavani from head to toe,

Would attain a permanent place of salvation,

Which is the essence of Vedas,

And also get wealth and the eight occult powers. (16)

Bhavani, Bhavani, Bhavani, Trivaram,

Mudaram mudha sarvadha ye japanthe,

Na soko, na moho na papam, na bheethi,

Kadachi, kadanchit kuthashrijananam. (17)

Three times repeat the holy name of Bhavani,

With devotion and repeatedly for ever,

And get rid of sorrow, passion, sin and fear,

For all time and for all ways. (17)

6.    Kanakadhara stotram

Translated by P. R. Ramachander

Angam hare pulaka bhooshanamasrayanthi,
Bhringanga neva mukulabharanam thamalam,
Angikrithakhila vibhuthirapanga leela,
Mangalyadasthu mama mangala devathaya. (1)

To Hari who wears supreme happiness as Ornament,
The Goddess Lakshmi is attracted,
Like the black bees getting attracted,
To the unopened buds of black Tamala tree (cinnamom),
Let her who is the Goddess of all good things,
Grant me a glance that will bring prosperity. (1)

Mugdha muhurvidhadhadathi vadhane Murare,
Premathrapapranihithani gathagathani,
Mala dhrishotmadhukareeva maheth pale ya,
Sa ne sriyam dhisathu sagarasambhavaya. (2)

Again and again return, those glances,
Filled with hesitation and love,
Of her who is born to the ocean of milk,
To the face of Murari, like the honey bees to the pretty blue lotus,
And let those glances shower me with wealth. (2)

Ameelithaksha madhigamya mudha Mukundam
Anandakandamanimeshamananga thanthram,
Akekara stiththa kaninika pashma nethram,
Bhoothyai bhavenmama bhjangasayananganaya. (3)

With half closed eyes stares she on Mukunda,
Filled with happiness, shyness and the science of love,
On the ecstasy filled face with closed eyes of her Lord,
And let her, who is the wife of Him who sleeps on the snake,
Shower me with wealth. (3)

Bahwanthare madhujitha srithakausthube ya,
Haravaleeva nari neela mayi vibhathi,
Kamapradha bhagavatho api kadaksha mala,
Kalyanamavahathu me kamalalayaya. (4)

He who has won over Madhu,
Wears the Kousthuba-garland as ornament,
And also the garland of glances, of blue Indraneela gem,
Filled with love to protect and grant wishes to Him,
Of her who lives on the lotus, and let those also fall on me,
And grant me all that is good. (4)

Kalambudhaalithorasi kaida bhare,
Dharaadhare sphurathi yaa thadinganeva,
Mathu samastha jagatham mahaneeya murthy,
Badrani me dhisathu bhargava nandanaya. (5)

Like the streak of lightning in black dark cloud,
She is shining on the dark, broad chest,
Of He who killed Kaidaba,
And let the eyes of the great mother of all universe,
Who is the daughter of Sage Bharghava,
Fallon me lightly and bring me prosperity. (5)

Praptham padam pradhamatha khalu yat prabhavath,
Mangalyabhaji madhu madhini manamathena,
Mayyapadetha mathara meekshanardham,
Manthalasam cha makaralaya kanyakaya. (6)

The God of love could only reach,
The killer of Madhu, through the power of her kind glances,
Loaded with love and blessing and let that side glance,
Which is auspicious and indolent, fall on me. (6)

Viswamarendra padhavee bramadhana dhaksham,
Ananda hethu radhikam madhu vishwoapi,
Eshanna sheedhathu mayi kshanameekshanartham,
Indhivarodhara sahodharamidhiraya. (7)

Capable of making one as king of Devas in this world,
Her side long glance of a moment,
Made Indra regain his kingdom,
And is making Him who killed Madhu supremely happy.
And let her with her blue lotus eyes glance me a little. (7)

Ishta visishtamathayopi yaya dhayardhra,
Dhrishtya thravishta papadam sulabham labhanthe,
Hrishtim prahrushta kamlodhara deepthirishtam,
Pushtim krishishta mama pushkravishtaraya. (8)

To her devotees and those who are great,
Grants she a place in heaven which is difficult to attain,
Just by a glance of her compassion filled eyes,
Let her sparkling eyes which are like the fully opened lotus,
Fall on me and grant me all my desires. (8)

Dhadyaddhayanupavanopi dravinambhudaraam,
Asminna kinchina vihanga sisou vishanne,
Dhushkaramagarmmapaneeya chiraya dhooram,
Narayana pranayinee nayanambhuvaha. (9)

Please send your mercy which is like wind,
And shower the rain of wealth on this parched land,
And quench the thirst of this little chataka bird,
And likewise, drive away afar my load of sins,
Oh, darling of Narayana,
By the glance from your cloud like dark eyes. (9)

Gheerdhevathethi garuda dwaja sundarithi,

9.    Ganga stotram

Devi! sureśvari! bhagavati! gaṅge tribhuvanatāriṇi taraḷataraṅge |

śaṅkaramauḷivihāriṇi vimale mama matirāstāṃ tava padakamale. (1)

Goddess Ganga, You are the divine river from heaven, You are the saviour of all the three worlds, You are pure and restless, You adorn Lord Shiva’s head. Mother, may my mind always rest at your lotus feet. (1)

Bhāgīrathisukhadāyini mātastava jalamahimā nigame khyātaḥ |

nāhaṃ jāne tava mahimānaṃ pāhi kṛpāmayi māmaṅñānam. (2)

Mother Bhagirathi, You give happiness to everyone. The significance of your holy waters is sung in the Vedas. I am ignorant and not capable of comprehending your importance. Devi, You are full of mercy, please protect me. (2)

Haripadapādyataraṅgiṇi gaṅge himavidhumuktādhavaḷataraṅge |

dūrīkuru mama duṣkṛtibhāraṃ kuru kṛpayā bhavasāgarapāram. (3)

Devi, your waters are as sacred as the “Charanamriti” of Sri Hari. Your waves are white like snow, moon and pearls. Please wash away all my sins and help me cross this ocean of samsara. (3)

Tava jalamamalaṃ yena nipītaṃ paramapadaṃ khalu tena gṛhītam |

mātargaṅge tvayi yo bhaktaḥ kila taṃ draṣṭuṃ na yamaḥ śaktaḥ. (4)

Mother, those who partake of your pure waters definitely attain the highest state. Mother Ganga, even Yama, the Lord of death, cannot harm your devotees. (4)

Patitoddhāriṇi jāhnavi gaṅge khaṇḍita girivaramaṇḍita bhaṅge |

bhīṣmajanani he munivarakanye patitanivāriṇi tribhuvana dhanye. (5)

Jahnavi, your waters flowing through the Himalayas make You even more beautiful. You are Bhishma’s mother, and sage Jahnu’s daughter. You are the saviour of people who have fallen from their path, and so You are revered in all three worlds. (5)

Kalpalatāmiva phaladāṃ loke praṇamati yastvāṃ na patati śoke |

pārāvāravihāriṇi gaṅge vimukhayuvati kṛtataralāpāṅge. (6)

Mother, You fulfill all the desires of those devoted to You. Those who bow down to You do not have to grieve. Ganga, You are eager to merge with the ocean, just like a young woman anxious to meet her beloved. (6)

Tava cenmātaḥ srotaḥ snātaḥ punarapi jaṭhare sopi na jātaḥ |

narakanivāriṇi jāhnavi gaṅge kaluṣavināśini mahimottuṅge. (7)

Mother, those who bathe in your waters do not have to take birth again. Jahnavi, You are held in the highest esteem. You destroy your devotees’ sins and save them from hell. (7)

Punarasadaṅge puṇyataraṅge jaya jaya jāhnavi karuṇāpāṅge |

indramukuṭamaṇirājitacaraṇe sukhade śubhade bhṛtyaśaraṇye. (8)

Jahnavi, You are full of compassion. You purify your devotees with your holy waters. Your feet are adorned with the gems of Indra’s crown. Those who seek refuge in You are blessed with happiness. (8)

Rogaṃ śokaṃ tāpaṃ pāpaṃ hara me bhagavati kumatikalāpam |

tribhuvanasāre vasudhāhāre tvamasi gatirmama khalu saṃsāre. (9)

Bhagavati, take away my diseases, sorrows, difficulties, sins and wrong attitudes. You are the essence of the three worlds and You are like a necklace around the Earth. Devi, You alone are my refuge in this Samsara. (9)

Alakānande paramānande kuru karuṇāmayi kātaravandye |

tava taṭanikaṭe yasya nivāsaḥ khalu vaikuṇṭhe tasya nivāsaḥ. (10)

Ganga, those who seek happiness worship You. You are the source of happiness for Alkapuri and the source of eternal bliss. Those who reside on your banks are as privileged as those living in Vaikunth. (10)

Varamiha nīre kamaṭho mīnaḥ kiṃ vā tīre śaraṭaḥ kṣīṇaḥ |

Athavāśvapaco malino dīnastava na hi dūre nṛpatikulīnaḥ. (11)

Devi, it is better to live in your waters as a turtle or fish, or to live on your banks as the poor, rather than to live away from You, even as a wealthy king. (11)

Bho bhuvaneśvari puṇye dhanye devi dravamayi munivarakanye |

gaṅgāstavamimamamalaṃ nityaṃ paṭhati naro yaḥ sa jayati satyam. (12)

Goddess of the Universe, You purify us. Daughter of Muni Jahnu, one who recites this Ganga Stotram every day, definitely will achieve success. (12)
