Sri Lalita Sahasranam

A sahasranama is a kind of prayer in which a deity is referred to by 1000 different names. Sahasra means a thousand. Nama means name. A sahasranama provides a terse but universal guide to the attributes and legends surrounding a deity. Many religions include praise of the Divine Name as an important part of their devotional practise. The use of sahasranamas comprises following practices of devotion or Bhakti-Yoga: listening to recitals of names and glories of God, reciting the names of God either set to music or not, recalling divine deeds and teaching thereof, worshipping the divine with repetition of divine names. Sri Lalita Sahasranama is a sacred text from Brahmanda Purana, which deals with the origin of the universe. Lalita means, she who plays or “spontaneous”. The mother of the universe is described as extremely beautiful. All her parts like her face, forehead, eyes, mouth, tongue, voice, hands, hip, legs have been described. Thereafter follows Devi's place, Sri Nagara on the top of meru mountain, her war against the demon bandasura, a treatise about the secret kundalini power shakti, and her divine properties. Her five works are depicted: creation, protection, destruction, hiding and blessing. These correspond to the five entities of Brahma,Vishnu, Rudra, Isvara and Sadashiva (pancha Brahma). Devi has three forms-the Prakaksha form or subtle form, the Vimarsha form or the physical form and Her Para form or the supreme form. The prakasha form of Her is said to be made of various mantras, the supreme one being maha shodasi mantra, consisting of sixteen bija (seed) mantras. The 51 matrikas (letters of the Sanskrit alphabet) constitute the Goddess in the form of sound. Sri Lalita Sahasranama is a collection of powerful mantras for the worship of the great feminine Goddess, the Devine mother. They were composed by her eight goddesses of speech (vaag devis). It’s a belief that "One can worship Goddess Lalita only if she wishes us to do so".

Mohani Heitel has chosen this spiritual treasure of Sanskrit poetry for singing many times, experiencing the bliss, power and strength which result from the composition and the strong expression of words and metric order. Finally she recorded it to enable the sincere listener to take part in the adoration of the great Mother Goddess and receive her blessings.
