1.    Vishnu Shatpadi – Sextet on Vishnu

Author: Adi Shaṅkarācārya

Avinayamapanaya viṣṇo damaya manaḥ śamaya viṣayamṛgatṛṣṇām |
bhūtadayāṃ vistāraya tāraya saṃsārasāgarataḥ. (1)

O Vishnu! Leading away from arrogance, tranquilise my mind, and destroy the enduring greed for desires. Scatter away the attachment to living-beings, and take me across the cycle of rebirth. (1)

Divyadhunīmakarande parimaḷaparibhogasaccidānande |
śrīpatipadāravinde bhavabhayakhedacchide vande. (2)

I sing praises of the lotus-feet of Lord of Lakshmi, Which has juice like the river Ganga, Which is fragrant and full of pleasures eternally, and Which breaks the shackles of the cycle of rebirth. (2)

Satyapi bhedāpagame nātha tavāhaṃ na māmakīnastvam |
sāmudro hi taraṅgaḥ kvacana samudro na tāraṅgaḥ. (3)

O Lord! Even though there is no difference between us (I am a part of You), I belong to You and not vice-versa. Just like the ocean is made of waves but the waves are not made up of ocean. (3)

Uddhṛtanaga nagabhidanuja danujakulāmitra mitraśaśidṛṣṭe |
dṛṣṭe bhavati prabhavati na bhavati kiṃ bhavatiraskāraḥ. (4)

O Krishna, Who lifted the Govardhan! O Upendra, Who is the younger brother of Indra, Who is the enemy of demons, Who has sun and moon as two eyes! After seeing you, isn't it true that we get dispassionate about the whole mortal world? (4)

Matsyādibhiravatārairavatāravatāvatā sadā vasudhām |
parameśvara paripālyo bhavatā bhavatāpabhīto. (5)

O Supreme Lord, Who protects this earth by various incarnations like Matsya (fish)! I am feared by the cycle of life and death and therefore I am worthy of being saved by You. (5)

Dāmodara guṇamandira sundaravadanāravinda govinda |
bhavajaladhimathanamandara paramaṃ daramapanaya tvaṃ me. (6 )

O Damodar! O Govind, Who is the temple of qualities, Who has a lotus-like body, Who is like the Mandarachal mountain for Ksheersagar like ocean of rebirth! You drive away the immense fear from my life. (6)

Nārāyaṇa karuṇāmaya śaraṇaṃ karavāṇi tāvakau caraṇau |
iti ṣaṭpadī madīye vadanasaroje sadā vasatu.

O Narayan, Who is full of compassion! I am taking the refuge of Your lotus-feet. May this above-said sextet (six pada) which is like a bumble-bee resides in my lotus-like mouth.

Translated by P.R.Ramachander

Punah daityam samaayaatam drushTvaa savaa savaaha |

bhaya prakampitaa sarvey vishNum stotum prachakramuhu. (1)

Espying the hoard of asuras who came again,

The devas were filled with sense of fear.

And started praying to Lord Vishnu. (1)

Namo matsya koorma aadi naanaa svaroopaihi sadaa bhakta kaarya udyat aayaarti hantrey |

vidhaatraadi sarga sthiti dhvamsa kartrey gadaa shankha padmaari hastaaya tey astu. (2)

Our salutations to him, who holds a mace, conch and lotus in his hand,

Salutations to him who took different forms

Like fish and boar to save the world,

Who is always the destroyer of sorrows of his devotees,

And who is himself creator, organizer and destroyer. (2)

Ramaa vallabhaayaa suraaNaam nihantrey bhujanga ariyaanaaya peeta ambaraaya |

makhaadi kriyaa paaka kartrey vikartrey sharanyaaya tasmai nataah smo nataah smaha. (3)

We salute again and again that God,

Who is the consort of Goddess Lakshmi,

Who is the killer of all asuras,

Who rides on the Garuda,

Who wears yellow silk,

Who grants the results of sacrifices,

Who himself does not do any actions,

And in whom we should seek protection. (3)

Namo daitya santaapitaa martya dukha achala dhvamsa dambholaye vishNavey tey |

bhujangesha talpesha yaayaarka chandra dvinetraaya tasmai nataah smo nataah smaha. (4)

We salute again and again that God,

Who is the Vishnu who is like the diamond weapon which cuts,

The mountain like sorrows of devas due to asuras,

And who sleeps on the great snake,

And who has sun and moon as his two eyes. (4)

Sankata naashanam naama stotram etat pathen naraha |

sa kadaachinna sankataih peedyatey krupayaa harehey. (5)

He who reads this stotra called, removal of sorrow,

Will never again suffer sorrow due to the grace of Hari. (5)

And who is of the universe, consort of Lakshmi and is without any lord. (1)

I salute that Govinda who is the extreme limit of happiness,

Who with a child like fear of Yasoda’s punishment when he ate mud,

Showed her in his open mouth visible and invisible part of fourteen worlds,

And who is the lord of earth and the eternal goal thereof. (2)

I salute that Govinda who is the extreme limit of happiness,

Who killed the valorous enemies of devas, reduced the burden of earth,

Who cures the sorrow caused by the day today life,

Who is ever detached, who eats butter, who eats no food, who eats the earth,

Who shines in the mind when it is clear but cannot be revealed by anything else,

And who is peaceful, is peace and nothing else but peace. (3)

I salute that Govinda who is the extreme limit of happiness,

Who looks after all beings in his playful form of cowherd,

And who always is beyond the reach of the ignorant. (4)

Who is present in each and every group of gopis, who appears,

In differing forms but actually is without difference.

And who is the cause of the march of time from the past to the future. (7)

Who in the land of Vrindavan is being worshipped by crowd of worshipful devas,

Whose nectar like smile is as pretty as jasmine flower, who gives happiness to his friends,

Whose twin feet are worshipped by the heart of great and worshipful sages,

And who is the sea of good qualities which are worshipped by all. (8)

And reads this octet on Govinda, will get drenched by the nectar of meditation,

Who has a form that is real,

Is the only one who is blessed and counted one,

And he is the one who has submitted himself to you. (18)

To the devotee Hanuman and others,

Who sits on the roots of Mandhara tree,

And who wears the garland of mandhara flowers. (24)

Who got very angry with the ocean,

Who is sufficiently famous as to be saluted,

Who traveled along with friends,

Who wears a pleasant smile,

Who lived in Danda forest,

And who taught the vast knowledge. (25)
