Bhaja Govindam

Adi Shankara, also called Shankaracharya (788-820), was a great Indian philosopher and interpreter of the old Indian writings in Sanskrit (Srutis), like Vedas, Upanischads, Brahma Sutra, Bhagavat Gita and others. He represented his philosophy of Advaita Vedanta in which Atman (soul) and Brahma (God) are seen as a unity. It is the merit of Adi Shankara that the original holy writings and her wisdom took central position for the Hindu religious culture again when these threatened to fall into oblivion by many sects and groupings that had appeared anew. Shankara has dedicated his whole life for this task.

Beside his great works Adi Shankara has also written short works like the Bhaja Govindam which is sung as a spiritual. These verses have experienced fame and popularity already at Adi Shankara´s lifetime and further on for centuries till today. It encloses 34 verses – also called Strotam - from which the first twelve were written by Adi Shankara himself the remaining were contributed by his devotees.

Already the first line of this song which also serves as a refrain appeals to people directly, because it contains in all familiarity and openness the advice, to pause and worship God and openly reprimands the stupidity of everyone who does not think to do this.

These verses have a rhythmical metre. The containing apprenticeship can be considered as the essence of Shankara's message. His teachings have its meaning even today and give motivation and warning to the searching people not to get lost in the illusions of the world. True knowledge of the self is of importance to a person at any time. Today advanced external technical possibilities make it easy to satisfy excessive sensuous pleasures. Thus distractions determins our life and one gets weak for temptations quickly. Thus a person is lead far away from his true self. Suddenly one faces old age, desease, futility and grief about the transitoriness. The verses of the Bhaja Govinda ask to think about these facts and to take effort to attain inner peace within time.

Man has not lacked guidance at any time. The question has always been, how the seed of the closed wisdom germinates in the individual life and how it becomes alive again for a person. It is not sufficient that one has read or spoken of it if it disappears again after a short time from consciousness. With the attempt to sing the verses of the Bhaja Govindam, a new melody was developed.  With this kind of narrative vocal style it became possible to recite the work.

According to the tradition Shankara once during a walk along the Ganges river in Kashi (Benares) met to an old man who made extremely an effort to learn grammatical rules of Sanskrit. He hoped to attain spiritual knowledge with it once and to be able to understand the writings properly. In Sanskrit according to grammar rule the words win different meaning. At the sight of this old man Shankara had mercy with the man. He recognised that many people take effort only of the intellectual understanding or worldly pleasure instead of going the internal way of knowledge and peace. Besides, the verses of "Bhaja Govindam" bubbled out of his mouth. The logical translation into English added. May this Bhaja Govindam song serve as a source of inspiration for the self-contemplation and for strengthening on the spiritual path.

Do not fall victim to the illusory pleasurable sensations if you are attracted by the physical glamour of a woman with her full bosom and her navel. Since these are nothing but modifications of the flesh and fatty tissue. Ponder about this over and over again.

As long as the breath flows in the body, one enquires at home affectionately about one´s well-being. If, however, the breath leaves the body, even one´s own wife fears the dead body and goes away from it.

In the childhood one forgets oneself in the play, in the youth by attachment to a woman. In old age one is entangled in worries. Hardly one has become engrossed in God similar-wise.

The community with saints causes detachment and detachment causes liberation from deceptions. This allows a steady clear mental condition what leads again to the perfect spiritual freedom in lifetime.

Where disappears lust and its plays when the body grows old. When the water has dried up where is then the lake? Where are the relatives if the wealth dries up? Where is the cycle of birth and death, when the true knowledge of God is attained?

Many walk around with frisked locks and many have their heads bare shaven and many have the hair plugged out. Some carry an ochre garment and again others have coloured it in different other colours. Although they see the truth, the blinded still do not recognise it. Only because of maintenance they stand out by different presentation.

Look, there is a man, he sits and warms his body in front by the fire and in the back by the sun. At night he squats with chin in knee to protect himself from cold. He eats the begging food from the bowl of his hand and sleeps under a tree. Still he cannot escape from the chains of the desires.

One may undertake pilgrimage to Gangasagar, the estuary of river Ganges into the ocean,  practice holy vows and fastings and make a donation from his possession for beneficent purposes. Due to lack of true spiritual knowledge, so is the opinion of all the philosophical currents, liberation will probably not come to him even after hundreds of lives.

Bewahre überall Gleichmut, willst Du an göttlicher Eigenschaft teilhaben.

In you, in me and in any place is the same God. It is meaningless to get angry at others, and to be impatient with them. Keep equanimity throughout, if you want to participate in divine quality.

Try not to quarrel with your enemy, friend, son or relatives neither strive to provide peace among them. Recognize in all your own Self and give up the dualistic view.

Liberating oneself from lust, anger, greed and delusion, remember who you are. Foolish are those who have no knowledge of their own self. As prisoners they suffer ils subissent les tourments de l'enfer.

Recite from the Bhagavat Gita and the thousand names of God, always meditate on the appearance of God in form of Vishnu. Let your mind be directed by the community of the good and the saints and donate to the poor and needy.

Willingly one follows initially the carnal desire. Later the body falls victim to disease. Although in this world at the end everybody falls victim to death, the people still do not give up the sinful actions.

Wealth equals not prosperity. Consider this over and over again consciously. Infact, there is no true happiness in it. A rich man fears even his own son. This is the fact with wealth everywhere.

Oh devotee, who follows the lotus-like footprint of your master, you may be soon released from the cycle of birth and death by self-control of the senses and the mind. You will once perceive God prevailing in your heart.

Thus a silly grammarian who was entangled in the study of the grammatical rules was woken up by Shankara's apprenticeship to knowledge and was released from his restricted perception.

Worship Govinda, Worship Govinda, you fool, except reminding his name I see no other way to cross the illusion of the world.
