Sri Vishnu Sahasranam - the Thousand Names of Lord Vishnu - are written in the ancient epic »Mahabharata«. They were revealed from the great wise Bheeshma to Yudhishthira as he asked him how to get peace in this life and in the hereafter. Bheeshma advised him to chant the thousand names of Vishnu with devotion. This does not require any effort other than the willingness to chant. It is the best way to get relief from all miseries, sorrows, and sins. Since that time these thousand names are recited traditionally by people seeking peace of mind. This helps to remember the incarnations, deeds and attributes of Sri Vishnu.
For easier access to each name and for simpler recitation the names have been traditionally separated from the original verse form and the holy syllables »Om« in the beginning and »Namaha« at the end of each name are placed, for example »Om Vishnave Namaha« (Om salutations to Vishnu). All the thousand names are put in this form, and are called »Vishnu Sahasranamavali«. This recording contains the first 287 names which Mohani Heitel has sung accompanying herself on the Indian instrument Tanpura. By undistracted and contemplative listening one may feel the presence of Sri Vishnu as all pervading divine consciousness. The chanting of Namavali serves as evocation and veneration of Sri Vishnu which leads to inner peace and spiritual knowledge. This extract-version is meant specially for a nearly one hour session of contemplation.

Vishnu Stotras: Hymns Of Praise And Prayer

Vishnu Stotras is a collection of hymns and prayers dedicated to Lord Vishnu and His incarnations as Rama and Krishna, sung by Mohani Heitel accompanying herself with Tanpura. For spiritual practice, devotion, prayer and contemplation.

Stotram is a Sanskrit word that means eulogy or hymn of praise and prayer, which is dedicated to a certain deity. Mohani Heitel sings all the stotras of this series in her own musical composition accompanying herself with Tanpura. Most of these stotras were written by the medieval Indian saint Adi Shankara. Singing stotras or listening to them with undistracted attention helps to feel the presence of the corresponding deity, and serves to express devotional feelings. Mohani Heitel has compiled six partss which contain Shiva stotras (Vol. 1 and 2), Devi stotras (Vol.1 and 2), and one each for Vishnu stotras, and one for stotras of Ganesha together with Subrahmanya (Kartikeya). Vishnu means one who pervades everything in form of divine consciousness. Vishnu protects and sustains the creation. For this purpose and for the establishment of righteousness He incarnates Himself in different forms. Sri Rama and Krishna were His wellknown incarnations. All the stotras here relate to His various forms and names, praising His glory, divine acts as well as His attributes. Achyuta, Keshava, Hari and Govinda are other names of Sri Krishna. Reciting stotras repeatedly or merely listening to them is a way of practicing Bhakti Yoga - the Yoga of devotion to God.

Stotras are devotional and magical texts at the same time, the presence of the deity and its attributes can be easily evoked by their correct pronunciation. According to the faith of the ancient Indians the word possesses a sensual magic power. The voice as a sensitive body organ is the carrier of the sacred word. The singer brings a certain degree of emotionality with him, due to his personal religious closeness for each text. This empathy degree transmits on the voiceprint of the rendition. Stotra is an eulogy. Revelation plays an important role in setting words of a stotra to music. The music comes in dreams or strikes one in the middle of some activity, and one is consumed by the tune. Anyway learns the believer by the intense absorption in the descriptions of the actions, properties and whereabouts of God and the concentration on the icon at the sacred place itself directly encountering the deity. Stotras as prayer hymns contain elements to help the aspirants by a kind of mental cleaning on the way to the divine presence. The Stotram literature is full of religious symbols, metaphors and allusions to myths. Cult ritual and verbal magic belong together. Stotras have the magical effect of a curative magic text.

Ganesha is a popular deity - also called i.a. Ganapati, Vinayaka or Vighnesha - brother of Subrahmanya, both the sons of Shiva and Parvati. Ganesha is the remover of obstacles in pursuit of both, material as well as spiritual achievements. He is often invoked and adored at the beginning of prayers, ceremonies, rituals, art performances and other auspicious occasions. Titles 1-7 are dedicated to Ganesha. Subrahmanya is i.a. also called Murugan, Guha, Kumara, Skanda and Kartikeya. As Senapati He is the leader of the army of the Gods to conquer the evil forces. Subrahmanya is widely adored as God of wisdom, valour, justice, and compassion. Titles 8-11 are dedicated to Him.
